The beloved Gilbert & Sullivan comic opera, The Pirates of Penzance, is coming to Thirroul (17 September), Bundanoon (23 September) and North Sydney (29 September - 8 October) this Spring. Tickets are now on sale for this strictly limited season.
Proudly presented by Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Sydney, this swashbuckling favourite opens on an idyllic beach in Cornwall, England, where Frederic, a young, strapping, handsome but not over-intelligent pirate is about to turn 21.
Having been inadvertently apprenticed to a pirate at the tender age of eight because his governess, Ruth, was hard of hearing, Frederic has come of age and is ready to step out into the world.
Having been at sea for so long, our hero can't remember what a young woman looks like. Suddenly, along comes a bevy of beautiful maidens out for a picnic and a paddle. Crisis for Fred! By chance, these girls' foster-father is a Major-General who missed his vocation as a rapper but is now making up for lost time. So what does he do to save the day?
You won't believe what comes next. If you love confusion, contradiction, con trickery, constabulary, and consummate melodies, then The Pirates of Penzance will explain who put the 'corn' in 'Cornwall' - and send you out of the theatre on a consupercalifragilisticexpialidocious high!
Featuring all-time classic songs such as 'Poor Wand'ring One', 'I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General' and 'A Policeman's Lot Is Not A Happy One', this fabulous production is sure to have you singing along.
The Pirates of Penzance is helmed by Stage Director Victoria Watson, Musical Director Rod Mounjed and Choreographer Sarah Pearce.
