Oh, pies. There's something very comforting and homely about them. My only problem is that I'm not big on baking, so finding a place in Sydney that plates up delicious comfort food in the form of pies was high up on my to-do list. in Newtown swooped into my life at the perfect time.

My craving for pies started late last year when I was spending a lazy evening watching DVDs with Captain Adventure. We were revisiting Waitress, in which Southern-twanged Keri Russell bakes pies at a diner. My favourite part is when she makes an I Hate My Husband Pie: "You make it with bittersweet chocolate and don't sweeten it. You make it into a pudding and drown it in caramel…" When pies are used as metaphors, they make me even hungrier.

Needless to say I was gagging for pies after the credits roll, and even went on a Google rampage to find a cafe or store dedicated to pies. To no avail. Surely enough, the next day the gods of the pie-world gave me a sign, because Lorraine from Not Quite Nigella published a blog post on .

Luckily Captain Adventure is always up for a food adventure, so we ventured out to Newtown on a Sunday afternoon along with two other foodie friends (Miss S and FM) to find out how these pies stack up.

We decide to order two savoury pies with two side dishes and two sweet pies between the four of us. Miss S and I initially debate ordering more, but in retrospect I'm very glad that our gluttonous pleas are ignored.

The lamb & rosemary pie is awesome. It's hearty, flavoursome and meaty. Also delicious are the two side dishes. The coleslaw is crunchy and lovely; and the mashed potatoes are creamy in the way that it's obvious a whole lot of butter went into it. Yumminess for only $10 served hot on a metal plate.

We also order the slow roasted shredded pork with apple and BBQ sauce pie with a side of kumera mash and mushy peas (also $10). It's also nice, but doesn't quite hit the spot like the lamb pie. The kumera mash is sweet and boasts a wonderful texture, but we find the regular mashed potatoes are still better. And unfortunately the mushy peas are our least favourite side dish today.

Then it's time for what I've been waiting for all day. The sweet pies. They're $6.50 for a big slice and are accompanied by a dollop of cream. There's no peanut butter & chocolate pie in sight, which makes Miss S and me instantaneously disappointed (I think our peanut butter obsession has reached new heights). No matter, we'll come back for it.

Instead we opt for the apple & blackberry pie, which is a sight for my gluttonous eyes. I love how the reddish purple tinge of the blackberries bleed through the apples in a pretty design. The apples still retain their bite, and the pastry is crumbly and delicious. It's even better when smothered in cream.

The Twix pie is indulgent on a whole new level. With an Oreo base, and a cheesecake-like consistency complete with caramel and Twix on top, it's so mouthwatering and cloying all at the same time. After a few bites, I start to feel a little bit sick from it, but I can't stop sticking my fork in it.

There's also a tongue-in-cheek pie etiquette printed on the menu. I do wonder if they should maybe invest in some knives though. Despite my adoration for sporks, cutting into those savoury pies was a bit of a struggle.

is like a home away from home. It's an unaffected abodes that'll slam down heart-warming pies in front of you. You can even get buzzed on some beer or cider (just like you would at home).
