If you think that money isn't everything, then you need to check out the Perth Mint. Boasting the worlds largest gold bar exhibition, and Australia's largest gold nugget collection, the Perth Mint will have you literally seeing gold all day long.
There's tonnes of things to do at the mint, so it's a good idea to kick off your visit by joining one of the hourly guided tours. The tours will take you through the original melting house, grand heritage building and vault, where you can uncover some interesting stories about Australia's rich golden history.
Gold Bar Exhibition
One of the biggest attractions at the mint would have to be the gold bar exhibition. There's gold bars of all different shapes, sizes and designs on display which have been sourced from all over the globe. If you want to feel rich just for a moment, just spend a few minutes amongst all that gold. It's an awesome feeling.
When I was younger, I thought gold was pulled out of the ground as solid bars. The gold nugget collection would have proved to be a very good educational wake up call for me back then. The collection showcases gold in all its natural glory, with a huge array of nuggets, wafer and crystals on display. One of the largest gold nuggets in existence is in the collection, and weighs in at a crazy 25.5kg.
You're going to come across a lot of gold during your visit, but gold in liquid form is by the far the most exciting. At the mint you can watch a traditional gold pour, where gold is melted down and turned into a gold bar. The gold pour was easily the best part of my visit to the Perth Mint.
There are heaps more things at the mint to discover including a historic coin collection that features the first coin produced in Perth, a specialist set of weight scales that let you know what your weight in gold is, and a shop where you can find a bunch of unique jewellery, coins, nuggets and souvenirs. Oh, and you can also engrave your own personalised medallion while you're there.
The Perth Mint is located just a small walk from the CBD at 310 Hay Street, East Perth, and is open 7 days a week from 9am - 5pm. Entry costs $15 for adults, $13 for concession, and $5 for children 4 - 14 years of age. Bubs under 3 years of age get in for free.
