Chris's vision, your fun

Crobs' Coffee & Chess is a non-profit initiative, that aims to connect Perth residents through chess, to reduce the incidence of social isolation in the community. A condition that Chris Roberton, founder of Crobs', is all too familiar with, after enduring 11 months of in-patient rehabilitation following a severe car accident.

Having suffered paralysis to the left side of his body and requiring a wheelchair for life, Chris understands how difficult it can be to get out of the house and meet other people. This motivated his decision to establish Crobs' Coffee and Chess, to provide the people of Perth with the opportunity to socialise and have fun (with a bit of mental stimulation thrown into the equation).

In addition to the recognition received for operating Crobs', Chris has also received Certificates of Appreciation from St Bartholomew House, an association located in East Perth providing shelter and resources for the homeless, for the many years of volunteer chess services he has provided.

Membership is free, though donations to support the continuation of this community service are very welcome. So, you can't play, no excuse, as free chess instruction is available for anyone wishing to learn.

A valuable community resource

Evolving from a small local chess club (since its 2011 launch), Crob's has become a valuable community resource. Chris and his team have expanded its scope, creating a number of free activities, programs and services for the Perth public, which have fostered deeper community connections and greater engagement.

Crobs' have run chess clinics for children and been invited by local governments to hold a chess stand at community festivals such as the Riverside Ramble (City of Swan and Stratton Lions Club Festival) and the Live it Up Festival (Rise Network and City of Swan). These extremely popular activities had the boards were filled with players all day. Moreover, Crobs' have hosted the chess component for various libraries as part of their International Games Day celebrations (Altone library, Midland library and others).

Free chess lessons

Currently, Crobs' offers social chess at various venues in the Perth area and surrounds, Chris provides volunteer chess services to St Bartholomew's homeless shelter and offers free chess lessons/courses to community members, school children, charitable associations and local government services.
