Act I opens in pearl diving season. Festivities are afoot as Zurga greets villagers. He is joined by Nadir, a friend from long ago and they reminisce about a beautiful lady called Leila. Nadir once spent a night with Leila and fell deeply in love with her, a fact he hides from Zurga. Another character, Nourabad, arrives at the village, bringing Leila with him. Nadir recognizes Leila, but Zurga does not.
In Act II, Leila is barricaded in a temple by Nourabad. Leila tells him the story behind the necklace she wears, which was gifted to her by a man she once rescued. Nadir comes to find Leila and serenades her with a beautiful melody. They are discovered by Nourabad. Angered, he tells the villagers that Nadir has betrayed them all. Zurga tries to help his friend by quelling the anger of the villagers. That is until Nourabad reveals the woman's identity as Leila. The revelation sends Zurga into a jealous rage and he calls for them to be killed.
Act III sees Leila proclaiming her love for Nadir. She begs Zurga for his life and requests her necklace be given to her mother. Zurga recognizes the necklace as the one he had gifted to the woman who saved him and suddenly realises Leila is that woman. As Nourabad incites the villagers to kill Leila and Nadir, Zurga distracts the angered mob by claiming that the village is on fire. Leila and Nadir manage to escape during the calamity while Zurga is left to face the judgment of Nourabad and the pearl fishers.
