Showcasing works by 130 emerging and independent artists

The inaugural spring edition of The Other Art Fair Sydney is set to take over Barangaroo's The Cutaway from 24 to 27 October.

WeekendNotes subscribers can take advantage of 25% off Friday-Sunday tickets using the code WEEKEND25 at sydney.theotherartfair.com until October 20.

Held for the first time in the fair's spectacular new home of The Cutaway at Barangaroo, The Other Art Fair aims to make art accessible for everyone, with thousands of artworks starting from $100!

However, this is not your average art fair! In addition to showcasing the works of 130 emerging and independent artists, The Other Art Fair Sydney also presents a dynamic four-day public program featuring live tattooing on-site, a physics engine-equipped Light Seesaw, workshops from MakerSpace & Co, art tours by Saatchi Art's team of curators, a live DJ set, activities for kids and delicious street food.

This is a unique opportunity to discover and buy contemporary art in an exciting and engaging atmosphere. This year, visitors will be met by Extract of Red Air, an inflatable art collaboration between Goldberg Aberline Studio and Yindjibarndi artists Sharon and Kaye Warrie.

Other highlights include:

  • Hand-Poked Tattoos - A love of graffiti and interest in making marks on places outside of a gallery led artist Lily Gloria to tattooing. Lily has created a selection of tattoos exclusively for The Other Art Fair Sydney, where she will take up residence and use a tiny needle to get the intricate dot work unique to her style of tattoos. Tattoos are $150 and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • The Light Seesaw - Melbourne-based multimedia design studio ENESS bring The Light Seesaw to Sydney for the first time. Exploring physics and other elemental forces, their seesaw is equipped with a physics engine and thirty-three rows of light that respond to your tilt as you soar through the air. ENESS seesaws - the original seesaw of light - have been installed worldwide, stimulating an international trend for reinventions of this classic play experience.

  • Workshops - Marrickville-based not-for-profit collective MakerSpace & Co will host a series of workshops and demonstrations throughout the fair. Visitors can discover the wonderful world of contemporary collage with artist Lyndon Pike, transform recycled plastics into hand-pressed wearable rings with Socially Plastics and learn the art of script signwriting, screen printing, Japanese woodblock carving or surface stitching embroidery, while enjoying artworks by the collective's resident artists. Timetable and bookings at sydney.theotherartfair.com.

  • Future Vision - Artist Kyle Weyburne will present Future Vision, an immersive installation using lighting reminiscent of computer circuitry. The paintings on display are created to be viewed through smartphones, as they come to life in this augmented reality experience.

  • Greener Future initiative - in an effort to decrease the use of disposable plastic bottles and cups at the fairs, British artist David Shrigley has designed a limited-edition drinking cup, available for purchase onsite at all global editions of The Other Art Fair.

Throughout the fair, food from some of Sydney's favourite venues will be on offer, including feel-good Vietnamese favourites from Bar Pho, Lambda - Sydney's hottest Food Truck, Broomfield's Pie Co hand-crafted pies and delicious coffee from Pull n Shots. The Other Art Fair bar will also be pouring wines, beers and plenty of other drinks for thirsty art lovers.

Musicland will host a lineup of DJs to perform during the fair, while after hours at Friday Late, visitors can take over as DJs themselves with The Mash Machine's intuitive interface, which allows up to four people at one time to create music just by placing and moving blocks.

Kids are welcome visitors to the fair, with FREE entry for children under 16 and a Kids Create area, where they can unleash their artistic flair and participate in creative art activities and crafty challenges suitable for all ages.
