Like the Dawn Service without getting up at Dawn
The One Day of the Year is an Australian play by Alan Seymour originally written in 1958 about Anzac Day.

Do you remember this one as part of the school curriculum? I do, though I think at fifteen years of age I was too self-absorbed and too silly to appreciate the many themes. So what's it all about it?

"Alf's son Hughie and his girlfriend Jan plan to document Anzac Day for the university newspaper, focusing on the drinking on Anzac Day. For the first time in his life Hughie refuses to attend the Dawn Service with Alf. When he watches the march on television at home with his mother and Wacka, he is torn between outrage at the display and love for his father."

Mates Theatre Genesis (MTG) is a non-profit, community theatre group which has been based in the Redlands for over twenty years. They rehearse and perform out of the Birkdale School of Arts building at 101 Birkdale Road, Birkdale.

May I agree, at school we didn't understand the significance unless we had a grandfather who'd been to war, but today war is all around us anedia has brought the horrors to our TV screen, so the realisation of what our men and women did for our future all those years ago is acknowledged and appreciated in greater depth. We need to celebrate this day. Great article. Susan
