The Australian Ballet puts on another cracker of a show
Sir Peter Wright's The Nutcracker is back in Adelaide for this week only at the Adelaide Festival Centre. Performed by The Australian Ballet and with music by The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, this is one classic Christmas show not to miss. Follow Clara into the world of the Nutcracker - but watch out for the Rat King!

For those unfamiliar with The Nutcracker story, it follows a young girl, Clara, a ballet student who receives a Nutcracker toy from a magician at her parent's dinner party. She believes the toy is magic and sure enough that evening at the strike of midnight she is transported to a magical place known as The Land of Sweets - where the Nutcracker Prince and the evil Rat King and his horde of furry minions reside. If you're unfamiliar with the story, we won't go into any spoilers - you'll have to watch the show to find out what happens!

If you've never been to the ballet, it's an experience like no other for adults and children alike. Your senses are on fire the entire show, completely immersed in the music that seems to move through you as world-class ballet dancers perform almost ethereal movements on stage.

The audience was brimming as the orchestra started their first Tchaikovsky piece and the curtains rose to a beautiful Christmas scene. The first thing we noticed was the costumes, each one was so detailed, elegant and captivating. No detail was left out, I had as much fun watching the dancers as I did with each scene or costume change. The costume designer, John F Macfarlane, used 10,000 hand-sewn beads on each Sugar Plum Fairy costume alone!

The Nutcracker runs for just over two hours across two acts. You wouldn't think so though, the show went quite quickly for us and was very immersive. For those wanting to take children (suitable for 8 and over), there is a day show available on Saturday. If you arrive early, there's plenty of food and drink available at the Adelaide Festival Theatre during pre-show and intervals. Tickets start at $51 for adults and $37 for children, purchased through the Adelaide Festival Centre.

Our favourite scene would have to be the classic dance of the sugar plum fairy. For those familiar with the song, it's such a stunning arrangement that comes to life through the beautiful ballet choreography on stage.

Whether you've seen The Nutcracker before or only just heard about it, this is one show not to miss. We thoroughly recommend the experience, the Australian Ballet has put on an absolute cracker of a show, just in time for the festive season.
