I cannot say it enough that South Melbourne Market is hands down my favourite market and where I shop each week. The atmosphere is energising, and the great mix of food vendors, restaurants, homewares and market stalls keep it interesting, not to mention the live entertainment. They have this knack of grabbing a celebrated occasion and making it their own by putting up a related event that brings the community together in fun, frivolity and of course happily eating. You'd be forgiven for thinking this is more food city than regular market, with the variety of food vendors on the premises.

Their recent Port Phillip Mussel and Jazz Festival is a fine example of how they brought the people and jazz together in a buzzing, family friendly atmosphere. We scurry out of our homes, abandon our tablets/computers and revel in the unity and community of people partying and enjoying life together. People flock to all that's held at this market which has its own parking space on the rooftop. The first 2 hours are free parking on market days, and there's also on-street parking, with parking restrictions ceasing after 6pm, making it easy for attending classes. It's the Neff Market Kitchen I'd be talking about, where cooking classes are held for adults, children and teens alike.

Currently, it's time for autumn classes in the Neff Kitchen. Classes are released six times a year, and finish mid-December to recommence at the beginning of February. Participants do not need to bring anything and classes take a maximum of 12 participants, so you'll get plenty of attention. All food made in the class is served to participants to enjoy while the chef continues the demonstration.

A hugely successful and very popular cooking school, Neff offers a range of classes at differing levels of ability and price point. Some of Melbourne's best chefs are brought to the people who are passionate about cooking in an innovative new culinary space. You have Sam Bate back with sous vide for the home cook. Unfortunately his classes have all sold out, which is a testament to the popularity of these courses.

MasterChef alumni Pia Gava will introduce you to cicchetti, however, she only has one space left, and Joe Grbac with only four spaces left will show you why his first solo venture, Saxe, receives rave reviews. Special Master Classes run for longer than the regular Master Classes, which allows more time for you to get up close and personal with the chefs to some of Melbourne's best restaurants as they teach you how to take your cooking to the next level.

For the rest of the available cooking classes, check here or on the website . It's not just the adults, but kids can learn and have fun too with the Petit Chefs and Demi Chefs classes, which are also hugely popular. Classes run at Neff need no advertising, as much as to bring to your attention just how popular they are. You need to book as soon as you get your hands on upcoming programs, so be sure to subscribe to be first in with the news. Neff is also regularly activated with demonstrations, workshops, private classes and hire for all foodie events like birthday parties, private dinner parties etc.

This market is a live cracker with something happening all the time. With the upcoming Easter season, don't forget to bring the kids as the Easter Bunny will be hopping around the Market to say hi. Though closed on Good Friday for Easter, the market will have an extra trading day on Thursday 29 March to pick up all your Easter treats . Fresh food stalls at this market open from 6am, and the specialty stalls at 8am.

Boldly contributing to sustainability, the South Melbourne Market has decided to go plastic bag free from Wednesday 11 April 2018 , so be sure to bring your own bags, baskets and trolleys to the Market and support their bold move to make a smaller footprint on this earth. In the meantime, up your skills and book a cooking class .
