If there is one thing Melbourne isn't short on, that is culture. Just catch a train to Flinders Street station, take a left and walk about one hundred metres or so and the arts precinct will unfold before your eyes in all its cultural glory.



In this precinct is a rather large and outstanding building with an exceptional water feature before it called the National Gallery of Victoria, located at 180 St Kilda Road. On the first and second floors of this gallery, accessible via escalator or lift, a cultural awakening awaits. Filled with incredibly rich exhibitions featuring works of art from ranging periods and regions of the world, the National Gallery is bound to provide an unforgettable experience.

The National Gallery is filled with exhibitions which change periodically. The website advertises which exhibition will be showing over whatever dates, and there is also advertising at the building itself and around Melbourne city. Once in the Gallery head straight to the information desk for a highly important map and "What's On" guide. Finding the exhibitions in the gallery can be a bit of a maze and guess work. If you aren't sure what you're looking for, or can't find the thing that you are looking, there are plenty of staff around the Gallery who can hopefully point you in the right direction.

The National Gallery is open every day of the week except for Tuesdays, and is open from 10am-5pm. On certain public holidays the National Gallery is closed, these are available on the website . There is no entry fee to get into the museum and seeing the exhibitions is free of charge. Photos are permitted to be taken in the galleries and of the artefacts and artworks, so long as there is no flash on the camera.



Even those who aren't culturally or historically minded will have something to gain from the National Gallery. It is hard not to be taken in by certain works of arts, and hard to leave without your head being filled with some kind of questions about the art and an appetite to learn more.

The National Gallery is a family-friendly place to come, with a second on the ground floor devoted to cultural activities that will engage children. There are also a number of quaint cafes and tea rooms throughout the National Gallery which provides a perfect opportunity to sit down with the family and enjoy a fine beverage and tasty treat before exploring more of the exhibitions.
