Winter in and around Canberra is cold, yet still full of wonder. Many of the inside activities don’t change much unless there are new exhibitions taking place. There is one place you should visit though to get a truly magical wintry experience, head over to the National Arboretum Canberra and check out the wintry wonderland of forests and plants, and see how it changes in the winter.

Arboretum Grounds, my photo

The Arboretum is six kilometres from the Canberra CBD and is a fabulous patchwork of forests and gardens that offer breathtakingly joyful views as well as some unique experiences as well as entertainment and an exciting events hub that includes the Margaret Whitlam Pavilion and the Village Centre , which is at the heart of the Arboretum. The Village Centre is home to a store, a café, and educational resources, as well as providing access to the playground with the acorn cubby house, and the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia , which is also open every day apart from Christmas Day from 9am until 4pm, so make sure you get there early.

The Arboretum is home to over 44,000 rare and endangered trees planted across the 250-hectare site, which is a beautiful place that celebrates conservation, scientific research, education, tourism, and recreation.

There are lots of tracks and trails to explore throughout the Arboretum that span over 20 kilometres. These tracks are multi-purpose and family-friendly walking and cycling tracks, and there are specific trails for equestrians to enjoy as well.

Bare Trees, my photo

Visiting in winter is interesting and desolate – the bare trees throughout are just as interesting as they would be covered in leaves. The evoke the wintry landscape effectively, particularly in the late afternoon when you can wander the grounds and fly a kite that you can buy from the shop in the Village Centre before 4pm, The expansive grounds are also great for kite flying, and home to interesting things like the Labyrinth Garden, and views across to Black Mountain and Telstra Tower.

Winter is just as interesting in places like this, and it would be interesting to see the passing of seasons, and how different the Arboretum looks in different seasons and at various times of the year.

Village Centre open 9am until 4pm
Grounds open 9am until 5.30pm
