Great magicians don't need pants

"Sleeves Up, Pants Down…." What you may ask? Hard working and a little bit naughty! Magicians stripped bare! How can that be? Well, yes it is definitely all that! "The Naked Magicians" brought to you by Samuel Klingner Entertainment, are coming to the Gold Coast for one night only.

"Good magicians don't need sleeves, but great magicians don't need pants", is a mantra that serves Brisbane boys Mike Tyler and Christopher Wayne well with no capes or billowing sleeves to distract. Here they rely on their creativity, scintillating charisma and saucy props to bring together a magic show that is cheeky, sexy and downright hilarious.

Strictly for grown ups (R18+), this is "Magic Mike" doing real magic. Christopher and Mike are both passionate and talented magicians in their own right and on stage they complement each other well. Christopher an entertainer and a master comedy writer amongst many things and Mike also an illusionist and hypnotist, together they have perfected the art of magic whilst proving that magicians do not need to hide behind clothes to entertain.

I was lucky through to have a couple of tickets thrown my way. Having not seen or heard of The Naked Magicians I must admit I am intrigued. Apparently I am the odd one out as everyone has heard of them and after listening to the goss and checking out the reviews, by all accounts I am looking forward to it.

I put a few questions to Christopher and Mike to get to know them a little better and delve into the wickedly mysterious world of magic...

What's the last thing you do before you step out on stage?
Christopher: Before I go on stage, I take a quick spray of cologne, and then Mike and I give each other a fist bump and remind each other of how cool what we are about to do is. Every single show.
Mike: We actually have a small ritual we do before getting naked together on stage or before any big TV or radio spots. We also like to check the air conditioning isn't too cold… the show is a little shorter in the cooler temperatures.

What's going to surprise people about this show?
Christopher: People get most surprised when they see how the standard of the magic is. We wanted the show to be as magically impressive as it is hilarious, as it is naughty.
Mike: The show is an orgy of magic, comedy, and nudity. The name really communicates the magic and nudity element which may be the reason people are always surprised at how funny the show is. We get so many comments and messages after the show saying things like "I loved the show… my jaw is still sore (from laughing)".

What's challenging about bringing this show to life?
Christopher: There are two challenges when it comes to bringing the show to life. The first challenge is keeping the same energy every single show. If we aren't on a stage performing the show, we are normally travelling to the next show, so we always make sure that when we walk on stage, we have the same energy and excitement levels as our first time.
Mike: The biggest challenge has always been getting the mix right between the magic, comedy, and nudity to make the show an incredible non-stop party atmosphere the entire time. We feel like we've baked a cake with each ingredient working together for the perfect taste. Want a bite?
The other challenge is making sure that we toe the line between "cheeky" and "smutty". Writing the show, we spent so much time making sure we don't go below the belt, but instead we tear the belt right off.

Without giving anything away, what's your favorite magic trick?
Christopher: The finale. I know Mike will say the same thing. You will never see anything like it in your life. Every single show without fail, the audience loses it. Let me promise you that you will never see anything in your life as shocking or hilarious as the finale of this show.
Mike: Apart from our finale which is literally a non-stop screaming moment from the crowd, my favourite trick would be one that happens entirely in the hands of the audience. It's such an amazing interactive trick that leaves everyone with a great souvenir.

What do you do when you're not doing the show?
Christopher: I can't remember what I do when Im not doing the show! I love playing guitar, spending time with my dog Kane, and of course we make sure we go to the gym every day, because when its time to get naked on stage or off, we want to give you something nice to look at.
Mike: Dreaming about the next time I'm on stage! We're both full time performers so the focus right now is on taking the show all around the world and showing our "magic bits" to as many people as possible. Our down time consists of plenty of exercise and outdoors fun to make sure there's something decent for the audience to look at when we're on stage with our sleeves up and pants down.

What's your perfect Sunday afternoon look like?
Christopher: My perfect Sunday afternoon is a few drinks in the sun with some good music and good company. With the craziness of this show, the simple things in life are now my favourite!
Mike: Family is important to us both. If we're home in Queensland, Sunday afternoons is often catch-ups with our close friends or family. With our clothes on of course.
