An active, novelty-seeking social sprite who loves getting the most out of living, working and discovering the world.
Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Victoria takes to the stage with a colourful re-imagining of one of musical comedy's most famous works - The Mikado.
Considered a stand-out hit of the Victorian era, The Mikado was born during a tumultuous time in the partnership of the popular twosome. While firm favourites of Queen Victorian herself, their relationship was going through tough times as Arthur Sullivan yearned to be seen as a "serious" composer, while W.S Gilbert saw no need to change the witty formulas he had set in place for audience success.
It seemed the two could not reach a mutual and musical agreement, but as this production intimates with an added prologue, Gilbert &Sullivan found one of their greatest professional triumphs with the creation of a work which still resonates well into the 21st Century. (look up "A Little List" to see how many pieces reference this song!)
The Mikado is directed by Andrew McGrail with musical direction from Timothy John Wilson, and opens on Thursday, 19th July for a limited season of five shows at the Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre in Preston.
