Hagwon is a Korean term for a for-profit private educational institution. Some consider
hagwons as private language centres or academies operated like businesses apart from the South Korean public school system. Most children begin attending them by the age of five. Despite receiving criticism both internationally and in South Korea itself,
hagwons have been a successful business in South Korea. Many parents send their children to hagwons, even though will cost them to get their children to a well-known university with the hope of having a successful career afterwards.
The Midnight Romance in Hagwon portrays
Seo Hye-jin (played by
Jung Ryeo-won) as a very successful teacher at a well-known
hagwon in Daechi-dong area, Daechi Chase Academy. She is not only an ace Korean teacher at Daechi Chase Academy but she also has a cool head for any drama at the academy, both with her students as well as their parents. She has quick wit plus the ability to read the room. She is a workaholic, and always puts her work above her personal life.
Seo Hye-jin's easy and predictable day-to-day life is shaken up when her former student,
Lee Joon-ho (played by
Wi Ha-joon) turns up and wants to become a teacher at his former academy. Lee Joon-ho was Hye-jin’s first student who she sent to a very prestigious university. Of course, Hye-jin is against Joon-ho’s plan to leave his current work at the big company to become a teacher at the academy. But the Daechi Chase Academy director is behind Joon-ho and supports him.
Not only that, Joon-ho's teaching method is also different from Hye-jin's ways. Joon-ho doesn’t want only to send his students to great universities but also wants to make them understand what they learn. Hye-jin doesn't like that idea. In Hye-jin’s opinion, giving the students questions that are most likely to be on the university entrance exam is more than enough.
Hye-jin is also head-to-head with a Korean high school teacher,
Pyo Sang-seob. Some of his students at school are Hye-jin’s students at the academy. Hye-jin came to Sang-seob's school and challenged him about the exam that he gave to his students. Not only has Sang-seob become Hye-jin’s rival, but Choi Hyung-sun (played by Seo Jeong-yeon) from Daechi Choisun Academy also wants to take down Hye-jin from the hagwon business. In Daechi Chase, Hye-jin also has many enemies who want to take her down from her success, including
Woo Seung-hee (played by
Kim Jung-young), the Deputy Director of Daechi Chase Academy.
The Midnight Romance in Hagwon not only uncovers the dirty secret in
hagwon businesses but also reveals that some good teachers care about their students.
The Midnight Romance in Hagwon also tells the secret midnight romance that begins when the lights go out in Daechi-dong Academy and the colourful stories of the academy teachers.
