Whether or not your children are familiar with David Walliams' best selling book,
The Midnight Gang, they are sure to enjoy this life-affirming adventure as it is brought to life live on stage by the

team] behind other David Walliam's classics including
Mr Stink,
Billionaire Boy and many of the fabulous
Andy Griffiths' 13 Storey Treehouse series.
There is a foreboding atmosphere as we are introduced to the run-down children's ward of St Crooks hospital. As the main character, Tom, encounters the menacing and intimidating matron, it seems this hospital is not a place any child would want to be when they were ill.
But as Tom meets the other patients on the ward, he realises there is to be more to his hospital stay than laying in bed in this grim children's ward.
As the clock strikes midnight, the children meet as members of 'The Midnight Gang', a secret tradition that has been passed on through the hospital's child patients for many years. The Midnight Gang's purpose is to go on secret missions to (with the help of each other and wild imaginations) make each other's dreams come true. From a North Pole adventure in the cold hospital basement to attempting to fly with the aid of helium balloons, mischief and mayhem abound as the children launch into these adventures and keep the villain matron at bay.
We are reminded of the engaging and immersive storytelling that only live theatre can create when the adventures go awry and, not to ruin the story, but old lady characters break through elements of the set and go flying through the streets and crashing outside. The audience's surprise and audible enjoyment of particularly this part of the show is what the live theatre experience is all about and what a great experience for kids this school holidays.
The Midnight Gang is about kindness, friendship, the magic of pretend and creating real adventures together. It also has those classic elements of toilet humour that go down a treat with an audience of kids every time. All of this, best experienced in this live theatre production.
The Midnight Gang play is recommended for ages 6-12. Reliably informed by a fan of David Walliams' work, there are differences between the novel and this theatre production, but she enjoyed it just the same. I asked my 7yo daughter who hadn't read the book, her highlight to share, she simply said she couldn't decide as she "liked all of it".
