Sometimes, I just start craving something different from the usual cafés that can be found all around the University of Melbourne. It's not bad eating at the Union House cafeteria either, but it gets monotonous after a while. It's a good thing I have friends who 'café-crawl' in much the same way as a 'pub-crawl'. They know all sorts of odd places to eat. The Middle Fish was one of them.

The Middle Fish is a blend of a Thai restaurant that serves authentic Thai food and a café that serves the generic coffees as well as oriental desserts. It can be found on Berkeley Street in Carlton. The restaurant looks almost like a warehouse and the inside is decorated with seemingly random odds and ends from both Australia and Thailand, such as the decorative chandelier made from metal cups from Thailand and the interesting wire-art on the brick walls.

The menu is in Thai with English descriptions of the dishes and ranges from light snacks such as spring rolls, satay and roti to main meals of rice dishes, soups, stir-fried dishes, curries and Thai salads. I had the Kang Prik Gra Dook Moo, which is a slow cooked pork ribs curry seasoned with various vegetables and Kaffir lime leaf served with rice. It was delicious and tasted like what you could find in traditional restaurants in Thailand. My friends, who are Thai and thus were more severe critics, also approved of the authenticity of the food they ordered.

Many of their dishes are quite spicy, but for people who can't handle hot food very well, there are still other options such as Pad Gapao Moo Kob, Vegetarian Fried Rice or some of the Thai breakfast dishes. The Crunchy Omelette of Mussels also wasn't too spicy.

Service is quite fast and efficient with friendly workers. The prices of dishes are reasonable too, especially for the quantity and quality of the meal.
