As I write I'm having some delicious chilli and lime zucchini pasta. Somehow, pasta always makes me think of pubs and bars (maybe I associate eating pasta alone with singledom?). In particular pasta keeps me of mind of the Martin Place Bar in the Sydney CBD. Now there's a pub that's decidedly midscale – lots of serious superannuated type on break from the tyranny of the office cubicle. It bills itself as "a contemporary space attractive to city workers on the go". It certainly is that, and especially attractive to singles, or those on the prowl who are not necessarily unattached. Located on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Martin Place, Martin Place Bar was deemed the national winner for the "Best Bistro/Pub Food" for the last two years by the I (LOVE) FOOD AWARDS.

The space is funky enough, and certainly more so than its competitors in the same radius. The convenient outdoor terrace is a great place to advertise your availability (for dating). Like most pubs, each night offers some special deal. I recently met with a couple of girlfriends on a Tuesday evening, and enjoyed the 2 for 1 cocktail deal on selected cocktails, and at $14 each, it's fair value. In spite of our happily sporting wedding rings, we could have easily "picked up" if we so desired, such was the vibe in the place. And to think, we just picked the most convenient place to meet (near a train station) So go forth singles! Martin Place Bar caters for lunch and dinner, and do great shoestring fries ($9 for a substantial serve). It's a great place to meet people, and decidedly less sleazy than other city pubs for that sort of a thing.
