Keeping a cappella forever trendy
Overall rating: ★★★★★
Date attended: 23/02/2019

No band. No instruments. Just 5 guys with a fantastic skillset of vocal cords and musical abilities to do justice to some of the best songs from one of the best eras in the music industry.

Held in the inviting and moody tent - The Wonderland Spiegeltent at Gluttony - it didn't take long for the gorgeous looking and sounding men from The Magnets to bring the heat on the stage, thanks to their unreal and versatile voices. While the title may be a bit deceiving (*spoiler alert* the guys don't strip!), the a cappella quintet deliver an epic selection of songs from the 80s and do justice to it through their eclectic skills in singing, beat-boxing, cohesively bring a sense of vocal harmony through their voices.

Rewinding the clock to the magical 80s era for their musical goodness, The Magnets were able to offer a unique and signature rendition of some of the greatest hits, such as Final Countdown, Dirty Diana, Ain't Nobody, and Purple Rain (to name a few). But, the biggest highlight of the show was what was perfectly named "The Magnets Medley", which incorporated 14 incredible songs into 4 1/2 minutes. This made audiences join in the fun, stand up and dance around and it felt like one of the greatest parties to be a part of, on this balmy Saturday evening in the Adelaide Fringe realm.

From the first song, audiences are enthralled in the spectacle on stage, where five guys join forces together and perform some of the best hits from the 80s, whilst being surrounded striking light bulb flashes. The stage set up is minimalist, but just the type that The Magnets require, in order to create a sonically pleasing experience for all. While there are 2 new faces within the band, their friendship is transparent and it is inspiring to watch unfold on stage, as the boys have fun while putting their pipes to good use. One by one, we are introduced to each band member, as they share a bit of themselves and their skills with the audience. Expect a bit of beat-boxing, a bit of rap, and a bit of friendly banter scattered throughout the show, as the boys deliver with jaw-dropping vocals that will leave you simultaneously envious and proud of the high-quality flavour that the boys add to some well-loved songs.

With a compelling combination of charm, chiselled looks, and charisma that instantly brightens the room, in addition to their appealing abilities around cohesive singing and crooning, the boys from The Magnets demonstrate a dynamic marriage of 80s rock and a cappella! They have a pool of talent brimming at their prime and if anything is to go by their performance last night, they are destined for nothing but success, with a fun and enjoyable loop of classics brought to fresh life, thanks to the boys at The Magnets. There's a reason why their shows near a sell-out status and it won't be long before they will have to open more slots to accommodate for the waves of people, who will want to enjoy their music.

The Magnets: Naked 80s will be performing at Gluttony, as part of the Adelaide Fringe till March 17. Book your tix here.
