This month, an exciting and flamboyant multicultural dance theatre interpretation of Shakespeare's Othello takes the stage at Footscray Community Arts Centre for three nights only (August 24 - 26).
The theatrical piece was created by internationally-acclaimed Indian dancer and actor Arjun Raina, who has astounded audiences all over the world with his vibrant combination of traditional Indian Kathakali dance with the works of William Shakespeare. Ideally placed to bring together the works of such fascinating cultures, Raina trained in classical dance in India, and British acting tradition in London.
As part of , Arjun Raina will also introduce elements of "Odissi" (India's oldest surviving dance form) along with performers of Japanese avant-garde dance forms "Butoh" and "Body Weather".
Alongside local Australian Butoh and Body Weather dancers Helen Smith and Peter Fraser, Odissi dancer Lillian Warrum, and Indian-Australian actors Ezekiel Day and Cherian Jacob, Raina's Magic Hour fuses the Shakespearean text Othello with Asian art forms to create a rich multicultural theatre experience that promises to amaze, amuse, and stimulate audiences.
Lovers of Shakespeare, Asian dance, and multicultural theatre will not want to miss this innovative and inspired performance.
In the lead-up to , Kathakali, Odissi, Butoh, and Body Weather workshops taught by the performers will be held on August 22 and 23.
