I doubt whether there is parent, grandparent or child who hasn't heard those famous lines. Out of the gateand off for a walk went Hairy Maclaryfrom Donaldson's Dairy. And not started to smile and tense in anticipation of a rollicking story. Everyone loves Hairy Maclary, but now you can learn more about the author in a new exhibition, ''.

The exhibition promises to be fun for all ages. It includes the original illustrations from the world-renowned author and illustrator of the Hairy Maclary and Friends books.

So all your favourites such as Hairy Maclary, Slinky Malinki and Schnitzel von Krumm, as well as lesser-known characters such as Sam Jam Balu (The Other Ark) and the Dudgeon (The Dudgeon is Coming).

The exhibition traces the evolution of Dodd's work examining the magic behind her creative processes. See Dodd's sketchbooks and how characters changed over the years, and how she so loving crafts her madcap characters.

If you thought a picture book was an easy thing to create, then think again. As Dodd said in an interview: "Children often have the notion that producing a picture book is quick and easy. I can tell you it's not. It takes me up to a year to produce one book. They can't be whipped up, and telling children that I do up to 25 drafts to get the text right often stumps them."

At this exhibition, you will find an activity zone for the kids. It includes a chance to have photos taken in the 3D photo booth. There will also be interactive games, art and craft activities and a quiet spot to simply be still and read books.

The exhibition runs from Sat 7 Sep – Sun 26 Jan 2020, so this will be great for the school holidays. There will be a special Family Fun Day on Sat 7 Sep, 12pm - 4pm

On the Fun Day, you can get your favourite Lynely Dodd book signed and enjoy a range of free activities including face painting, hands-on craft activities and anyone can dress up furry to be a part of the Hairy Maclary and Friends costume parade. Now that does sound like quite a sight.
