Nestled in a corner of the historical Old Fremantle Prison complex, the Literature Centre (until recently known as the Fremantle Children's Literature Centre) has for many years been one of the most important literary education venues in Western Australia: a mecca for teachers, librarians, students, writers and artists from around the state. Programs which are regularly held at the centre include book launches, professional development courses for teachers and librarians, academic enrichment programs for children of all ages, and much, much more.

For the general public, Family Open Days at the Literature Centre are especially popular, and are held on one day each school term from 11am until 4pm. Guests are encouraged to wander around the premises, view the exhibitions, meet local and interstate authors and illustrators, and purchase books and original art-work from the Centre's bookshop.

This term, the Family Open Day is to be held on Saturday, 18th August, and the special guest writer / illustrators will be Leigh Hobbs from Victoria (the creator of 'Old Tom' and 'Horrible Harriet') and Coral Tulloch from Tasmania, who has co-written and illustrated with Alison Lester 'One Small Island', this year's winner of the Wilderness Society's Environmental Award for Children's Literature.

Leigh will speak about his work during two sessions, at 11.30am and 1.30pm, while Coral will provide guests with an insight into hers at 12.30pm and 2.30pm. During these presentations the two artists will share the inspiration behind their books, their specific objectives, and the creative process through which they have taken shape: invaluable information for anyone with an appreciation for the rich genres of children's literature and illustration, as well as for aspiring writers and illustrators.

In addition to the presentations, visitors will also have the opportunity to enjoy four exquisite picture book exhibitions in the centre's galleries, some of which are available for purchase.

In a nutshell, the Open Days at the Fremantle Literature Centre are not-to-be-missed events for anyone with a love for good literature, the creative arts and education. Families with young children will also find the Centre to be an inspiring destination and will enjoy the presentations by the visiting speakers and the wonderful assortment of high quality children's literature which is for sale in the bookshop. A further incentive for the littlest visitors is that face-painting is available all day.
