"Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba" From the first line of that famous opening song "Circle of Life", the audience is surrounded by the wildlife of Africa's Serengeti. The zebras, lions, birds, giraffes and other members of the animal kingdom move through the audience and onto the stage to greet the newborn cub, Simba, at Pride Rock.
The production is faithful to the animation film storyline, and it is fantastic to experience a live version of a favourite movie. All the same characters are present but the ones who carried the show are crowd favourites Rafiki, Zazu and of course, Timon and Pumba.
The costumes and special effects are incredible. I've always been dubious about animals characters on stage because they're not realistic. But the animal costumes are so well designed it is easy to forget that the animals aren't real.
The actors also move and dance just as their animal counterparts would, and their physical performance is only matched by the richness of their singing voices.
This show is a must-see for everyone; young and old. The Lion King is showing at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne until October 2015.
