The Lion King is finally making a return to cinemas. The film is currently being re-released worldwide for a limited run, both in original 2D and post-converted 3D. The Astor Theatre 's 2K Digital Presentation is both affordable and stunning, with the venue itself a great place to see a classic.

Generally regarded as one of the greatest animated films of all time and adored by both adults and children alike, The Lion King is a undoubtedly a timeless classic. The greedy studio heads at Disney have kept the film locked away in the Disney Vault for over fifteen years, and the film is notoriously difficult to find on DVD, preventing a whole new generation from discovering the film.

Released in 1994 during the Disney Renaissance , a period when Disney consistently released a slew of hits to critical, commercial and award-winning acclaim, the film is still the highest grossing hand-drawn animation of all time. Loosely based on William Shakespeare's Hamlet and encompassing elements of tragedy, betrayal and teenage angst, the film is essentially a coming-of-age fable, just with lions and other African wildlife.

It is superbly animated, with beautifully extensive landscapes, rich characters and quotable dialogue. Its influence is evident in modern animation and it continues to thrive on stage and through merchandise. However, it is the songs that are arguably the main reason it is so renowned and universally loved. With songs from Elton John and Tim Rice and a score by Hans Zimmer, the musical numbers are instantly recognisable, garnering two Academy Awards and numerous other accolades.

Personally, The Lion King will always have a special place in my heart, as it was the first film I saw at the cinema when I was four years old. Thankfully, it has lost none of its youthful charm and I am extremely glad a whole new generation of youngsters will get the chance to see the film for the first time on the big screen. Go with your partner, your children, your whole family. Trust me, you won't regret another chance to witness the magic of Disney. Definitely recommended.
