The bistro at The Lion Hotel serves as its casual dining option, offering both pub-style dishes and a few others that can be expected in more “upmarket” settings. It is a popular place so booking ahead is advised to ensure you get a table.

Their Spiced Crumbed Cauliflower still retained a bit of texture with the crumb coating setting it off nicely. The spices in the coating gave them a delectable spiced flavour that was not too spicy. The aioli that came with the cauliflower had the addition of dill oil for a bit of extra flavour.

The coating of the calamari in the Calamari Fritti was not too dense and the calamari was cooked just right. The chips served with the calamari were fried to golden brown and seasoned with the right amount of salt. Accompanying the dish was a lemon wedge, aioli dipping sauce and a side salad. While not apparent from the dish’s description, the salad included some feta.

When ordering the Lion Burger, it can be ordered with either one or two beef patties. The beef patties had a nice degree of charred flavour while still retaining a bit of moistness. Tanginess was provided by Mcclure’s pickles and pickled red onions. The potato bun provided some difference from the usual wheat bun. Like the Calamari Fritti, the burger came with a serving of chips.

The generous amount of rocket leaves in the Rocket and Pear Salad was what gave the dish its peppery flavour, which was contrasted by the shreds of pear. The dressing for the salad gave it a tangy flavour and ensured the dish was not too dry. We had the Parmesan cheese omitted as my father did not like its taste.

The decor of the bistro gave it a modern feel. Senior card holders that visit during non-public holiday weekdays at lunchtime can enjoy a 25% discount on their meals.
