Looking for a venue for your birthday or big promotion that offers something different and more exclusive? Search no more, located in Fortitude Valley, the hub for nightlife in Brisbane, has got you covered.

If a great night out means a bar serving cheap drinks, hundreds of people and booming music, then this probably isn't the place for you. That sort of night out I feel is reserved for those clubbing days when you just want to go out and get 'smashed' as some call it. No, a night out at is one you want to remember. It's the perfect venue for more intimate gatherings, where you can actually hold a proper conversation with someone without shouting over the music "What did you say?".

We went for a friend's 25th celebration, just drinks after work. As you first enter the building, it's all very private and secure. We almost thought we were at the wrong place as it didn't look like a party venue – it's a hotel too as I mentioned before. You are welcomed by the front desk and inform them you are with so and so party and then you are to make your way up the elevator to the rooftop bar. Wow. An urban retreat, was my first impression.

It's beautiful, right out in the open you can see the Brisbane sky, and if it rains I was informed by one of the staff that there would be no problem - last year a fully retractable roof was installed just in case. The decor and atmosphere of the place makes you feel like you're at a really special place. You'll get the idea when you have a look at some of the photos they've posted on their website – it does actually look like that in real life.

A few other groups of people had the same idea as us, what a great place to mingle without there being too many people, just your own group and a few others. Actually, there were more than a few groups, but the space is designed in such a way that it's unobtrusive.

The dress code is definitely smart casual or even bordering on semi formal. Ladies in cocktail dresses and gorgeous high heels. Men in suits, sometimes from work, others in nice dress shirts and casual leather shoes. No flip flops and board shorts seen here. I like it like that. In a way it separates itself from other places just because of that.

The Rooftop Champagne and Cocktail Bar is open to the general public however while you may be able to walk just in the street, don't leave it to the last minute just in case. The Rooftop Bar does have a maximum capacity and there might be more formally organised functions going on at the same time, too. If you'd like to throw a more casual celebration, and looking for a venue where everyone just gets their own drinks and nibbleys, all you need to do is call the hotel in advance to make a guest list for you and let them know how many people are coming. You don't need to pay to reserve the area, just arrive early so you can grab a few chairs and tables near the bar.

The Rooftop Cinema is also opened to the general public and they have screenings during winter every Tuesday night. 'You can enjoy a beautiful evening watching a movie under the stars with the city lights as a back drop' as their website says. I checked out the cinema and it is awesome. What a great idea for something a bit different to do instead of the usual way of seeing movies. It's a lot more intimate, too, since you can sit more closer together with your date or friends.

Earlier I mentioned that other more formal organised functions are also held at the Hotel. Both the Rooftop Bar and Cinema can be booked out exclusively for your whole party. On site catering, live entertainment, theming and prop hire, AV, Stage and Lighting, and Accommodation packages – are all on offer at the hotel. This makes it an awesome venue to throw parties that are classy and easy for you to organise since everything can be included. Just contact the functions coordinator on 07 3852 9000 or you can complete a form online with your requests and inquiries.

To sum up the Limes Hotel , it's a modern and classy hotel. There's so many options of how to experience it. Why not even stay a night? The Roof Top Bar is lively, especially on Friday and Saturday nights, so there is some noise that would be heard in the rooms below. But after such a fantastic night, you have the luxury to just go downstairs and experience the boutique hotel's comforts without having to go through the hassle in finding a cab to catch. After midnight, if you check with reception you can score a special last minute deal to make a reservation.
