We Queenslanders are known for our love of the beach. Yet, for those of us who reside in Brisbane it normally takes a long coastal drive before we can enjoy a glimpse of our yellow sandy oases. Yet, there is a one spot in Brisbane unknown to many where we can go to enjoy the wonderful spectre of the open blue and it can be found in Cleveland at The Lighthouse Restaurant.
Sitting at perhaps the Eastern most point of our great city, The Lighthouse Restaurant sits perched on a cul de sac surrounded by nothing but water and small beautiful parklands. As you sit down to enjoy your platter of fresh and cooked seafood along with a complimenting glass of crisp white wine, you could be forgiven for thinking that you are floating on water.
Admittedly, there may be no yellow sandy oases. But nonetheless, there are few better places along our coast where you can sit and enjoy some of the best local seafood with a view to match.
Undoubtedly, the busiest time of the week at the Lighthouse Restaurant is Sunday lunch and there is good reason for this. Its location is perfect for a Sunday drive as it is just far away enough to feel like a little escape from everything. This is the day we travelled there.
There can be no arguing. At peak hour on Sunday lunch, the Lighthouse is hectic. It is not a small venue as it can seat roughly 250 patrons at any one time. At 2pm the place is full, so you could imagine what I mean. But, this is a good thing. It helps to create a buzz in the place which is never quite enough to overcome the tranquil effect of the soothing ocean view.
The Lighthouse Restaurant is something of a landmark in Brisbane with a history that dates back to 1879, when the first house on the point was constructed. In 1936, an unfortunate event occurred when the original house was burnt to the ground. A replica was built which still stands today though of course with many facelifts since this time.
Do not let the name deceive, the Lighthouse Restaurant is much more than a restaurant. It also serves as a function center. Weddings and business luncheons are increasingly becoming part of life down at the Lighthouse. In addition, there is takeaway offered too for those opting for a picnic in the nearby park overlooking the bay or a take home dinner.
Everything else aside, the standout event at the Lighthouse is Greek Taverna Night. Restaurant norms are cast aside as the place is turned into something akin to a big Greek family party. A scrumptious banquet of Greek cuisine is served up while the crowds are treated to live entertainment. After dinner, be ready to dance the night away too.
