The State Library of Western Australia is celebrating the work of world-renowned New Zealand author and illustrator, Dame Lynley Dodd. Dame Lynley Dodd is the creator of a fictional dog called Hairy Maclary. He is the main protagonist of the Hairy Maclary and Friends book series.

His first appearance was in Hairy Maclary From Donaldson's Dairy which was published in 1983. There are over twenty books in the series. Hairy Maclary stars in most of them, the rest are about his other animal friends. The books have sold over five million copies worldwide. They continue to be popular to this day.

Hairy Maclary's nemesis is Scarface Claw. He's a large black cat with big yellow eyes who is scared of nothing and loves to terrify Hairy Maclary and his friends. He was introduced in Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy in 1983 and has been a reoccurring character in several books since.

Scarface Claw is the star of the latest book in the Hairy Maclary and Friend's series.

It is called Scarface Claw, Hold Tight!

It was released on the 2nd of October 2017.

To celebrate the release of the new book the State Library of Western Australia will be hosting a free exhibition about Scarface Claw from September 30 to the 1st of November.

Original artwork and artefacts from the author will be on display showcasing key moments in the life of Scarface Claw and you will be able to see how the latest book was developed from concept sketches into a finished product.

If you grew up reading Hairy Maclary and now have little ones who are the right age to enjoy these books, you should take them to this very special exhibition before it ends.
