The Left Handed Chef

While it might look like a smaller coffee shop, don't let fool you, it's likely one of Melbourne best-kept breakfast secrets.
Located on Park St not too far from the South Melbourne Town Hall and The South Melbourne market is The Left Handed Chef, a quaint coffee shop with a sweets cabinet to delight even the most serious of a sweet tooth.
If you're serious about sweets, this is where you'll find tasty treats such as a red velvet lamington and also what's become something of a local treat, the waffle doughnut. It's pretty much what it sounds like, a sweet cinnamony sugary treat with a doughnut hole in the middle and it's genius. And if savoury is your thing, no need to miss out as the specials menu includes savoury and sweet dishes with waffles such as the Piggy (a thick cut bacon waffle) and vegetarian options too.
The coffee is spot on, staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming and the owner and chef at the helm Ehud Malka (yep, left handed) and his partner Holly have created a cafe that feels like it's you local too.
However, here is some advice, arrive hungry. Really hungry because the portions are generous and the food is honestly incredible. The menu is a bit different from what you might expect from the usual breakfast fare.
I tried the Grand Slam Breakfast which was toast with the tastiest hummus I've ever had (it was so fresh) with haloumi, bacon, poached eggs and dukkah.
My dining partner ordered the bircher muesli which was not just a generous serve but absolutely packed full of fruit.
If you're popping in on a weekend, get in early as seating is limited, even on a weekday we found it buzzing busy. The Left Handed is open each day but does close early on Tuesday. It's one cafe where you can tell it's carefully run by those who love what they do. Do yourself a favour and get there soon!
