South Yarra is a charming, little suburb full of parks, gardens and tree lined streets. Whilst close to the city and intersected by busy Toorak and Punt Roads, many of South Yarra's side streets feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle.
One such street is Lawson Grove, off Caroline St. Lawson Grove is a tiny, residential cul-de-sac lined with trees, clivias and hydrangeas. A short way down this street on your right, you'll come across a tiny, sun dappled entrance to a little grocery store and café – The Lawson Grove Shop. If the tables in front of the café are full, do not despair – The Lawson Grove Shop is surprisingly large, occupying the basement of one of the art deco apartment buildings that are typical of South Yarra.
The Lawson Grove Shop sells a small selection of high end groceries, second hand books and take away meals. However, "Shop" is probably a bit of a misnomer as this gorgeous establishment is better known for its smooth coffees, fabulous baked goods and café fare with a bit of South Yarra flair (think truffle oil and maple syrup bacon).
Be warned, however, there is little flexibility in the menu and the cafe can be very crowded on weekend mornings.
If you are a South Yarra local and you've never been here, you simply must make this high on your café rotation. If you are not from South Yarra, be sure to pencil a stop at The Lawson Grove Café next time you are in the area – be it to shop on Toorak Rd, run around the Tan, visit the Botanical Gardens or ride along the Yarra bike path. You won't be sorry you made the trip.
I wouldn't bother with Lawson Grove. I went their the other day and even though I told them I was pregnant they blatantly refused to cook my eggs hard.
Even after they were served & I asked them to re-cook they refused. The only option was to receive my money back. However, the guest that I was with had to pay in full.
What's more - If you order "extra" bacon make sure you ask for 2 X serves as you only get 1 round cut of bacon. If you ask me – there’s not much bang for your buck given a serve of bacon is $4.50!!!

I sometimes drop into Lawson Grove Shop for coffee or brunch and have always found it delightful, the staff courteous and the service timely even when the place is incredibly busy on weekends. Last time I was there, a friend I had introduced to Lawson Grove Shop a few weeks ago was there introducing another friend to the cafe.
The Shop is nestled among some beautiful art deco buildings designed by Howard Lawson, a prominent architect of the times. On weekends many people seem to arrive by bike or on foot with their dogs and the cafe is just around the corner from the Yarra River trail, off Alexandra Avenue.
There is much to like about the cafe and its point of difference is that you can pick up some milk, delicatessen goods, or a take-home meal on your way out.
