Laughter is a great way to escape for a moment, relax and unwind. I ventured into a slightly run-down building with a nondescript shopfront in Hindley St to meet the 'master of mirth', Frazer Kirkman. The 'captain of cackle' runs laughter sessions here every Monday from 6pm. I wanted to find out if you could make yourself laugh at nothing, if you could sustain it for any length of time, and if indeed it would make you feel better…..
Frazer Kirkman is your 'hipster of happiness' for the Laughter sessions.
Frazer has an interesting background. Born and raised in Adelaide, after completing a Neuroscience degree he travelled the east coast of Australia conducting workshops in hypnosis, meditation and laughter. After a stint as 'Frazer the mind magician' at the Rhino room in Adelaide he travelled around Europe running classes, making Oxford in England his home base where he taught meditation for two years. Frazer believes that positive thinking, practical insights and wisdoms, hypnosis, meditation and relaxation can all help to free people's minds so that they can live to their full potential.
The community loungeroom is stocked full of books, games and even a typewriter…..
I wasn't sure what to expect at my first session, or whether I'd be able to 'let my guard down' enough to really open myself up and enjoy it. Frazer had plenty of warm ups and exercises to help us relax and let go. We were joined by a very ungainly looking fellow who's infectious laughter quickly spread to the group proving that laughter really is contagious! The hour and a half session flew by, afterwards I felt truly relaxed all over, calm and invigorated. I left feeling happy and more positive about the world. Meditation is also included which complements the laughing sessions which sometimes can get quite raucous; I'm told the holes in the wall are due to a previous session which got a little out of control!
The Reading room is for anyone to use. These locals are enjoying some of the books on offer. The octopus is just contemplating life…….
Frazer also conducts free Yoga classes in the Botanic Gardens every Tuesday at 10:30am by the Lotus pond. He is available to businesses to teach yoga, laughter sessions, relaxation, meditation and positive thinking. Frazer is also looking for different venues to run his classes.
So is laughter really the best medicine? Can you die laughing? Give it a go and find out!
A post-laughter debrief and snack of healthy fruit after our session.
sorry about that Dave.....I thought it would make a different and interesting story- Frazer is a unique character who I met through a Meetup business group. I wish we had a way to know what everyone is working on!
