Five years may not be a long time in the game of life but it can seem like a lifetime over the course of a relationship. The Last Five Years , an award-winning musical by American composer, lyricist, and playwright, Jason Robert Brown , puts one couple's relationship under a musical microscope. The Last Five Years is the next venture for Paul Peacock's Underground Cabaret , playing from Thursday 11 to Sunday 14 July.

The emotionally charged show, based on Jason Robert Brown's own failed marriage, utilises song to tell the story of Cathy Hyatt, a struggling actress, and Jamie Wellerstein, a writer whose star is on the rise. Its innovative story-telling technique has Cathy's story told in reverse from the breakdown of their marriage back to their first meeting, while Jamie's story presents their five year relationship chronologically. Only once throughout the show are the two characters together on stage. Their stories collide in the middle with Jamie's proposal and their marriage.

Brown's musical style has been described as 'complex and 'rhythmically challenging' and his lyrics are honest and incisive. The talents of Casey Edwards and Charles McComb as the doomed couple and musical direction by Tim How will bring the production to a new audience at Underground Cabaret, Perth's newest cabaret venue at the Kings Perth Hotel.

Underground Cabaret is the brainchild of singer, actor, teacher and entertainer, Paul Peacock, and its brief is to showcase "Perth's best talent". If you love great musical theatre, performed in the atmosphere of a New York Jazz Club, and would like to support excellent local talent then come along for the show, a counter meal and a couple of drinks in the licensed bar.

Think of this as a sneak peek at the next Hollywood adaptation of a popular musical. The film version of The Last Five Years is currently in production with Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan in the starring roles.
