A themed party or a sweet tooth cure
I often wonder if children of today will have precious memories of their favourite sweet when they are my age. Luckily for my age group there are still shops which cater for sweets that were popular from years ago and I can smile with delight when purchasing them whilst unfolding a vision of a special moment in time.
My favourites include orange filled Darrell Lea Chocolates, which are as scarce as hen's teeth these days because only a small number of people like the orange flavour and also the Choo Choo Bar and Golden Rough Chocolates. I can remember riding my pushbike home from the council pool eating a Choo Choo Bar and being left with a black tongue. The first time I saw the Golden Rough was as a prize for a birthday party game. I can still remember the game. Fond memories linger of the Lolly Bracelets where we girls would talk about the colour and flavours of the ones we were going to eat next.
Stepping into "The Land of Sweets" in Kent Street Maryborough, owner Lida Nielsen has just the shop for a flood of memories to come rushing back. Lida tries to source varieties of old fashioned lollies, the older the better she says; the ones that are sought after by certain age groups yet now becoming favourites of the younger generations as well. Overseas residents are not forgotten with sweets such as New Zealand, American and English candy, as well as Dutch Liquorice.
Not only does the business have an enormous amount of sweets, she also caters for all types of parties including Birthdays, Hen's nights, Valentine's Day, Girls Night Out, New Born, Halloween, Raffles, Lolly Cup Towers for Children's parties, etc and provides the service of delivery to her client's event. Gift baskets made to order are also on offer or you can make your own with a wide gift range which includes large drinking glasses depicting specific ages, cups and saucers and speciality chocolates such as mobile phones. Not to be forgotten is a wall long display of banners, balloons, invitations, party hats, party bags, plates etc., you name it, The Land of Sweets have something to suit every occasion.
Being in business for eight years and working with assistant Tahlia for the past five, both ladies have a wealth of knowledge and experience in creating the perfect scene for your special event. I couldn't possibly leave without purchasing a traditional Choo Choo Bar and a Lolly Bracelet for myself and a couple of chocolates for the girls as well.
