The Kilgour Prize Is now held annually and 2020 marks the tenth year of exhibitions since 2006. Artist and philanthropist
Jack Noel Kilgour (1900-1987), a friend of William Dobell who had a long-standing connection to Newcastle, bequeathed funds for a perpetual competition in portrait and figurative painting.
The $50,000 first prize was awarded to local artist
Michael Bell on 31 July, for his double self-portrait
Starting The after party (Two self-portraits) 2020. This work of art was full of interesting details and had a touch of humour and lightness which was missing from many of the other final works. Many 2020 entrants took inspiration from the COVID-19 global pandemic and dealt with serious and sombre concepts such as isolation and loneliness.
There is a $5,000 prize awarded for the most popular artwork chosen by the general public. Online voting closes on 21 October with the winner being announced on 26 October. My choice was
Self waiting for life to happen number two 2020 by
Daniel Butterworth. I liked the fact that it was painted on cardboard and was full of emotion.
The exhibition is free but
Newcastle Art Gallery encourages booking your visit online as they are limiting the number of patrons to 80 per session.
