As their name suggests, the Kalamunda markets are held in Kalamunda, located in the majestic Perth Hills on the first Saturday of each month from 8:30am to 3:30pm (dates may vary subject to public holidays).

Run by volunteers from the local Rotary Club, 70% of the funds raised go to local charities. A variety of delectable home-made treats, appealing to any palate, are sold along with home-grown fruit and vegetables, all providing a healthy and affordable alternative to today's steep supermarket prices. Some stalls even offer free samples of their produce.

Held in the park-like surrounds of Central Mall, the variety of stalls is so great that organisers have a waiting list of would-be stallholders. On an average day you can expect to find between 130 and 150 separate stalls.

For the visitor, this means a wide array of arts and crafts are available, ranging from beautifully hand-crafted décor items and accessories for the home and garden to fashionable jewellery as well as plants, clothing, shoes, bags and some second hand items. Alongside the stalls are local cafes and mobile food vendors offering the chance to grab a bite to eat.

A Perth institution, people flock from afar to attend the markets, with many out-of-state visitors timing their excursions to Perth to coincide with the event. The markets offer something special for everyone, and people from all walks of life attend these in the hunt for a good bargain.

Many items – including some unique and beautiful jewellery pieces – are remarkably cheap, with prices you won't find elsewhere in Perth. Some of Perth's most popular small businesses started out as stall holders at the markets, with demand for their products enabling them to expand into a full time operation; an example of this is the nearby "Little Miss Cupcakes" at Shop 3 Haynes Street, Kalamunda – also well worth a visit while you're there.

Stallholders are very friendly, with many taking the time to chat whether or not you're buying. They're understandably proud of the pieces they've produced and happy to discuss the techniques that have gone into creating them.

The popularity of the markets means parking can be difficult in the morning; around lunchtime it seems to get easier.

Finish off with a scenic drive on your way back into Perth down the spectacular "Zig Zag" off Lascelles Parade – a one-way road boasting breath-taking views of Perth and the Indian Ocean.

Only thirty minutes drive east, past vineyards, orchards and farms the markets are just one of the attractions offered by Kalamunda.

So why not call it a day, grab the kids, and take a nice drive into the countryside.
