Following the successful tour of Martha by Friedrich Von Flotow across Victoria in February/March 2024, Lyster Opera returns to the stage with Rossini's hilarious comedy, The Italian Girl in Algiers. Tickets are now on sale for this critically acclaimed production - two Melbourne performances only: 14 & 15 September, 2 pm at Irene Mitchell Studio, 44 St Martins Lane, South Yarra 3141.

The Italian Girl in Algiers is a comic opera by Gioachino Rossini, composed in 1813 when he was only 21 years old.

It tells the story of Isabella, a spirited Italian woman who shipwrecks in Algiers and outwits the local ruler, Mustafà, who wants to marry her. She rescues her lover, Lindoro, who is Mustafà's slave and teaches him a lesson in female power and charm.

The opera features one of Rossini's most dazzling scores, brought vividly to life by some of Victoria’s most exciting professional singers.

The role of Isabella is regarded as one of the most dazzling of all of Rossini's heroines and Lyster Opera is fortunate to have two magnificent mezzos who are more than equal to its challenges: Angelique Tot will sing the role on 14 September and Alexandra Mathew will take on the role on 15 September. The talented cast includes rising star Joshua Morton Galea as Lindoro on 14 September while tenor Hew Wagner takes on the role on 15 September. New to the company is Laura Slavin who stars as Elvira on September 14 with Sarah Jane Pattichis performing the role on September 15.

Rounding out the stellar cast is Maria Woolford as Zulma, Troy Castle as Taddeo, Jamie Moffat as Mustafa, Christopher-Jack Andrew as Haly and Terence McManus, Erin Absalom and Lachlan McIntyre as Mustafa’s Italian captives who have a trick or two up their sleeves.
