Ok, apparently it's actually called Mrs O'Brien's Chipper Sandwich Bar, but that hardly rolls off the tongue now, does it? And unless you grab a ladder and a magnifying glass, you're not likely to notice the Mrs O'Brien labelling on the sign.

This little hole in the wall has been a fish and chip shop ever since I can remember and it has changed hands a few times over the past few years. Its latest incarnation is supposedly an authentic Irish Chipper, but since I have never been to Ireland I hardly think I am qualified to judge how genuine it actually is.

The menu consists of a veritable United Nations of flavours from the very British chips with curry sauce ($7.50) and sausage in batter ($5), to the South American flavours of taco chips ($9.50), Indian vegetable samosas ($4.50), and Italian 'Godfather' burger ($12.50) with chicken breast schnitzel, tomato, chorizo sausage, bacon and chilli sauce, grilled mozzarella, aioli and rocket. And let's not forget the Aussie burger ($12.50).

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what the Irish part was, and there was nothing that even hinted at a Guinness battered fish.

Other menu items include the all-day Breakfast roll ($10.50), a range of fish and chips options starting from $9.50 all the way to $17 for the 'luxury fish and chips', plus a number of interesting burger options ($12.50), salads ($6/$13) and the usual sides.

There is also a 'specials' board and regular 'meals to go' menu which tend to favour Italian flavours and pastas.

When I visited on a Friday lunchtime, all but one of the 'specials' had been crossed out. Luckily for me, the one remaining option was the one I was most interested in: a pumpkin, parmesan and pea risotto ball with tomato relish ($4 each).

I really enjoyed these risotto balls, which I initially bought to share with others, but actually ended up scoffing most of them myself. They were crispy on the outside yet still sufficiently moist inside. The flavours were good and the relish tangy.

I also ordered a basic serve of fish and chips ($9.50) which was two decently sized pieces of fat fish, cleanly fried in a decent batter, crisp, fresh chips and served with a small tub of tartare sauce and a wedge of lemon. The presentation was great, it looked and tasted like the oil was clean, although the fish was a tad on the dry side.

[ADVERT]In keeping with the ethic flavour convention, Mrs O'Brien's has regular specials nights including $15 chicken parma and chips night (Monday) and cheap-ass Tuesdays with $10 battered sausage and chips and curry or chicken ball, chips and curry.

Both nights include a free drink with certain meals ordered after 5pm.

Not so long ago, the Chipper was getting some less than favourable reviews but following a menu re-launch in early July they are working on fixing that.

Their Facebook page offers regular freebies and prizes and looking at it, reminds me that most of their signage actually promotes it as a sandwich and juice bar, which is weird because I didn't see anything that remotely resembled a sandwich or juice. Maybe it's an Irish thing where 'sandwich' means 'burger' and 'juice' means 'soft-drink'.

Maybe I just didn't get it because I'm not Irish enough, though with a name like Shannon…

Mrs O'Briens is open from early in the morning, which is unusual for a fish and chip shop, though I am not sure the entire menu is available until later in the morning.

I'd certainly go back, and next time I will definitely try some of the more unusual offerings… can anyone tell me what a batter burger is ($5.50)? Or is it something you just need to try without thinking about too much?
