Abbi, Juan and Tilda are three young adults, living in Seattle, whose lives are about to take off. Abbi is a genetics student applying to Oxford, Juan is a comic artist, and Tilda fronts a punk band.

As children, they underwent an experimental gene therapy, and when their medication runs out they encounter some bizarre side effects. They try and track down Dr. Alex Sarkov, the scientist responsible for what happened to them, with the help of Sarkov's former partner, Dr. Sydney Burke.

The Imperfects is an American-Canadian sci fi series. The premise reminded me of the British series, Misfits, which was about a group of young offenders on community service who got superpowers due to a strange storm. However, the team in The Imperfects are a lot more functional to begin with, and don't view themselves as having superpowers, although they do have new abilities that are potentially pretty useful. Tilda has super hearing and can do damage with her screams, Abbi's pheromones cause people to become obsessed with her, and Juan can shapeshift into a strange creature. Or, as one of the characters explains in the first episode, they are basically a banshee, a succubus and a chupacabra.

Another difference between the two shows is that the characters are a lot less gross, vulgar and incompetent, although the way they deal with an assailant who can come back from the dead is pretty Misfits-esque.

Australian comedian Rhys Nicholson (a former judge on RuPaul's Drag Race Downunder) is an interesting casting choice as the villain (or perhaps anti hero?), Dr Sarkov. You don't normally get Aussie style swearing in a sci fi drama show.

I liked the diversity of the casting, and the effects are well done. There is relationship and family drama, action, and a bit of blood and gore. Also, just as a heads up, the last episode ends on a massive cliffhanger, and as my fellow sci fi fans will know, there is no guarantee that there will be a second season to resolve it. Here's hoping!

The Imperfects is an enjoyable, sci fi/coming of age series that doesn't take itself too seriously. It premiered on Netflix on September 8, 2022.
