A group of old university friends gather together to spend New Year's Eve at a remote hunting lodge in the Scottish highlands. By New Year's Day, one of them will be dead.

The Hunting Party is an Agatha Christie-style murder mystery, written by Lucy Foley, author of The Invitation and The Guest List. If you enjoy a country house mystery, and I really do, then this book will not disappoint you. All the characters have secrets, which we learn of one by one, and there are some quality red herrings. There's nothing tremendously original about any of it, but that's okay if the basic murder mystery formula is what you are looking for.

The story is told from many different points of view, which can make it confusing to follow at times. It's easier to keep track if you listen to the audiobook version (available from Audible ), which has several different narrators for different characters, with their various accents adding some extra richness to the story.

None of the characters, with the exception of Doug and Heather, the staff at the lodge, are particularly likeable, but in this kind of story, I don't think they need to be. The group of friends from Oxford are there to bring the drama, with their entangled relationships, bad assumptions, and snobbery.

There is a limit to how much I can say about the plot without giving spoilers. There is a murder, but even the identity of the victim is not revealed until at least halfway through the story. The ending was mostly satisfying, although there was one loose end that bothered me.

All in all, The Hunting Party is a gripping murder mystery, which will appeal to fans of Agatha Christie. I will look out for other books by Lucy Foley in future.
