After having seduced millions of young people from all over the world with her Twilight series, the writer Stephenie Meyer got involved in a new project: turning another one of her bestsellers into a movie. The Host is a fascinating sci-fi thriller about the power of feeling and humanity.
When asked to comment about the meaning of this new story, Stephenie Meyer underlined the idea that The Host "highlights the importance of finding a balance in life". Although we can certainly speak about a science fiction movie as well as a touching love story that transcends human imagination, The Host certainly brings much more than that through the maturity and realism with which universally human topics are approached.
Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) & Jared (Max Irons)
The inner conflict that the main character, Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan), finds herself in immediately appealed to the movie director's (Andrew Niccol) imagination. Referring to precisely this movie, Niccol stated to the press that "it is always easier to say something about the present by placing the action in the future". When knowing the movie they are watching is about the future, people take things a lot more easily. Science fiction is not about nowadays' reality. However, movies like The Host leave them with a reason for reflection.
In a very bleak future, the Earth is occupied by a quiet, intelligent and very dangerous species of parasitic aliens called "Souls" who take over the humans' bodies, inhibiting all the victims' emotions, blocking their personalities and consciousness. One of the survivors, Melanie tries to fight against the enemy that has invaded her body. She puts her life at risk trying to save her friends and family. Her greatest achievement lies in succeeding to make her invader get in touch with her deep feeling of love without betraying her peers and jeopardizing their lives.
However, she soon finds out her troubles do not end here. After living such an out of the ordinary experience, she is hunted by all parties, each one with a different purpose in mind: scientists want her as research material, aliens are still trying to defeat her, while humans think she sided with the enemy. Meanwhile, she sets on a fascinating journey together with Jared (Max Irons), crossing the desert and building connection ropes that no human or alien force will ever succeed to destroy.
Another strong point is that the film brings together a host of very talented young actors including Saoirse Ronan, Max Irons and Jake Abel, and prestigious actors such as William Hurt, Diane Kruger and Frances Fisher.
