I am always looking out for new experiences, wherever I may find myself.
If you want to make Australia day special (and extra fun) this year you may consider participating in the The Havaiana's Australia Day Thong Challenge, which sees hundred of people on inflatable thongs trying to create the longest line of inflatable airbeds on the ocean.
The event takes place at five of the most well-known beaches around Australia, with Cottesloe in Western Australia successfully setting a new world record last year, managing 2088 people out in the water. There's no prizes for guessing where the New South Wales event is - Bondi Beach.
If you've always wanted to try your hand at breaking a world record, or just think it would be pretty fun way to celebrate Australia Day, you can register at Ticketmaster. Everyone 8 years and older is able to participate. Tickets cost $25.00, as well as a booking fee (so $27.80 all up).
There is also the option of getting your tickets on the day for $30.00. However the Bondi event is likely to sell out, so it's probably safest to purchase your ticket online. But hey, if you show up on the day and miss out, there are worse places to spend Australia Day than at Bondi Beach.
The money you spend will be going towards a good cause - $10.00 from every registration is to be given to the local Nippers club at each state's beach. For Bondi, this means the North Bondi Surf Club.
The Havaianas Australia Day celebrations will officially begin at 8.00am, when registration opens. The beach activities will then start at 9.00am, running until 2.00pm. They will include the Havaianas Paddle Challenge (a paddling race), the Havaianas Dash For Thongs (like racing for beach flags) and the Giant Havaianas Relay (a running race). A BBQ will also be held from 10.30am to 2.00pm and Havaiana merchandise will be on sale throughout day.
Marshaling for the world record attempt will begin at 12.00pm and you must get there early enough to collect your inflatable thong (one hour before the attempt is recommended). Before you head out on the water you will get briefed by safety teams and will need to collect a coloured wristband that matches your ability on the water - green for advanced swimmers, orange for above average swimmers and red for average swimmers or those participating with children.
The world record attempt is to start at 12.15pm and end at 12.45pm. There will be games and activities out on the water to keep you entertained, and a rope to help you stay in place. As well as the safety teams, there will be lifeguards and watercraft out there to make sure everyone stays safe.
If you can't make it to Bondi Beach for the Havaianas Thong Challenge, you can still order a Havaianas Australia Day Backyard Pack and have your own backyard event. The pack contains four inflatable thongs, four drink holders, a Frisbee, a beach ball, bunting, tattoos and a foot pump. It costs $120.00.
