The Hating Game[/LINK] stars Lucy Hale, Austen Stowell, Damon Daunno, Sakina Jaffrey and Corbin Bernsen and is directed by Peter Hutchings. It's based on the best-selling novel by Sally Thorne with a runtime of 98 minutes. It'll screen in cinemas from 27 January 2022.

Lucy and Joshua are two executive assistants forced to work together when their rival publishing companies merge, making their two very different, respective bosses co-CEOs. There's a promotion to be had and both Lucy and Josh are vying for the same job as Managing Director. Sharing an office and sitting across from each other only adds fuel to fire as they engage in oneupmanship. Lucy tells Joshua she will resign if he gets the job, and expects him to do the same.

The Hating Game is a pleasant enough movie that's not a hard ask to sit through at all, if you like romantic comedies. Good looking male lead with sex appeal, nice looking female lead with the perfect plump red sexy lips and come hither eyes. The comedy is digestible and quite sharp at times and the scene where they call a truce and lay down their weapons (you'll see what I mean when you watch the film) is downright brilliant. Unfortunately it doesn't stay original and falls back on cliché moments and romcom tropes that reminds you of You've got Mail, when the protagonist has to take care of his sick rival or there's but one room only available in the hotel, and they have to share it. Surprise, surprise - very predictable.

True, this is an out and out romcom but without the intensity and fire that takes your breath away. Someone forgot to turn on the heat and things are quite tame and undercooked considering the intensity of the title. Albeit there are a couple of steamy scenes, but nothing that makes it stand out in a crowd. As for character development, there's not a lot of that, apart from a quick put-together that exposes Josh's vulnerable side. Overall, the film may not quite manage lift off from zero to ten but it's pleasant enough to sit through on a rainy day when you've got nothing else better to do.
