The Harrowing is a Young Adult graphic novel that was written by award-winning author Kristen Kiesling and illustrated by Rye Hickman. It is 240-pages long and was published by Abrams Books on 18 April 2024. The book follows a teenage girl named Rowan Sterling who develops psychic powers that give her terrifying premonitions of blood, violence and murder.
After her powers awaken, Rowan immediately speaks to her father, who makes a phone call and gets her drugged, kidnapped, and shipped off to a facility called Rosewood that trains teenagers with special abilities like hers to become Harrows. A Harrow is a person who can predict murders before they happen. After arriving at Rosewood, Rowan becomes completely dedicated to their cause, and becomes the best Harrow that she can be. But then she has a vision that involves her boyfriend Lucas. Will she protect Lucas or follow the rules at Rosewood and get him arrested for a crime he hasn't even committed yet?
I really enjoyed
The Harrowing. It was fast-paced, thrilling, and hooked me from the start. The premise reminded me a lot of the 2002 film
Minority Report. I was surprised with how much graphic blood, violence, and horror there was in
The Harrowing. I was really outraged with the position that Rowan is put into when she arrives at Rosewood. I wanted to slap a lot of the adults in this book. The staff at Rosewood see Rowan and the other girls as tools that can prevent future crimes. They do not care what lengths they have to go to convince them to sign up so they can use their powers for their benefit.
The Harrowing was a great novel for young adults. It would definitely appeal to fans of horror and mystery.
Summary: Rowan Sterling used to be a normal teenage girl but then she developed psychic powers and the terrifying ability to predict terrible murders before they happen.
