Rock climbing for me has been one of those things that I've always wanted to do for years, but never actually got around to doing it. So when my friend invited me out to The Hangout in Bayswater, I couldn't be more excited.

After a lengthy hour or so drive (we were driving from south of the river), and a bit of a struggle with Tomtom, we finally arrived at The Hangout. My first impressions of the centre were good. The outside looked new and modern, and this inside was even better. The equipment was new and well maintained, the walls looked great, and the staff were friendly and passionate about what they were doing.

As much as I wanted to go straight for the more advance walls sporting awesome looking overhangs, I started with one of the beginner walls which was much more suited to my skill level. After a quick safety induction I was climbing my first wall, and well as they say, the rest is history. I was hooked. By the end of the day I was attempting some pretty intense looking walls, and to my surprise actually getting a fair way up them. To give you an idea of the size of the place, I only got a taste of about half the walls in the three or so hours I was there.

The Hangout has a heap of varying graded climbs which will suit all skill levels right from beginner through to expert. In total there's more than 100 different climbs to try out which are regularly changed for variety. For the more experienced climbers, The Hangout boasts the largest lead roof in WA.

Entry is only $17 for adults, $15 for under 18s, students, and concessions, and $13 for children under 13. This price includes the harness hire which is essential if you're climbing. Once you pay the fee you can climb for as long as you like which is fantastic. If you want to start climbing regularly, The Hangout offers memberships which give some great discounts.

Rock climbing is an absolute blast, and if you've never been, you need to try it out next weekend. The Hangout is the perfect place to start for beginners, and looks like an amazing place for the more experienced. For more info check out The Hangout at www.thehangout.com.au
