I had the opportunity to visit the Guildford Hotel when it reopened recently. From the moment you see the building it is evident that there has been a huge amount of work done on restoration.

The builders have clearly tried to keep in line with what has gone before. One of the largest projects they worked on was the construction of the replica of the belvedere on the building — it was crafted and placed on the venue via a crane in February to a cheer from the audience that gathered out on the street front.

It's the hotel's most notable external feature. You can also stand in the courtyard and see up into the inside of the belvedere, which you wouldn't have been able to do in the old building.


Also, featured above the bar on the top floor is a steel beam from the original belvedere that warped in the fire.


The Publican Group Australia who took on the restoration of the building have honoured the heritage of the building in the new design and restored many of the original features.

During the construction of the new bar, many hidden gems were discovered and incorporated into the design features. The colourful terrazzo tiles where the ping pong table is are actually the building's originals. These were discovered when the removed the old flooring.

The fire damage remnants can still be seen throughout the building and have been used as a feature. There are burnt out timbers and blackened wood scattered through the walls of the venue. Original supporting beams from the venue have been used on both bars, and you can find restored windows and a number of timber features atop the main bar.

All the original fireplaces have been retained throughout the venue. They're basins retained into the original walls which are remnants of the bedrooms on the top floor when the venue was originally built as a hotel. One of the most interesting features is from when they stripped back the walls they found that the bricks used were handmade by convicts. They even have the authentic toolmarks which has added that extra heritage element to the building.

The restored white-and-grey majesty can be found in the heart of Guildford where she was first built in the 19th century, just a short walk to the train station.

The new menu has some twists to some old school eats and is not limited by country or style. The food is suitable for sharing around a table or you can eat whilst holding a beer, or sipping an espresso martini. There are manchego and jalapeno croquettes, fried cheese burger spring rolls or moreton bay bug rolls on offer. A selection of classics make up the bulk of the menu; The Gilly Cheeseburger, brisket sanga or the some delicious beer battered fish n' fries. A selection of smoked items for feasting with friends like cheddar kransky, sticky pork butt braised lamb ribs or try a little bit of everything with 1 kilo of smoked meat.

Ask the bar staff for their recommendation on one of the 18 taps or a bottled beer. With local
brews, ciders and hops you'll be spoilt for choice. The wine list showcases the best of neighbouring Swan Valley, WA and our foreign favourites. Try a seasonally created cocktail - like the Swan's Old Girl or let the bar tenders match your mood with a specially crafted concoction from the gin and whiskey bar upstairs.
