We all know that suburbs like people have characters. Rich, poor, snooty, humble, loud, shy, inviting, arrogant, brash, understated, arrogant, these are just some of the adjective we associate with people, places and suburbs.

[ADVERT]One of my favourite adjectives is boho. And Fitzroy is boho.

Grungy cafes spilling on to pavements, unassuming bars which serve delectable cocktails, generous bargains hidden amongst odd-end boutique stores, twiggy-mod, uber chic patrons and ofcourse the crazy bicyclists - with all these elements Fitzroy defines boho.

Grub Food Van , one of its young residents, does complete justice to the character that is Fitzroy.

It's easy to miss Grub Food Van as you walk down Brunswick Street. Quietly located on van moor street&ll=-37.80104,144.977533&spn=0.003031,0.005681&safe=active&fb=1&gl=au&hq=grun van moor street&cid=0,0,8148755377672008609&t=m&z=18&iwloc=A Moor Street at the back, you are greeted by an unassuming looking Airstream which plays gatekeeper to the the hubbub of activity around and behind it. As you find your way past the tables and chairs around it, you are instantly transported into the green house which doubles as a cafe.

There are many things about the Grub Food Van that make you fall in love with it. What got my attention immediately was the colour. The green house itself is a sea of, what else but, green. Then there is the colourful knitting casually draped across benches and thrown across tables while eclectic blue and green garden chairs with quintessential design extend an undeniable invitation to relax. A ping-pong table in the centre of it all entertains the restless souls, while their adorable pet dog Mutti walks around drawing loving pats.

Eccentric decor which combines the old with the new seem to be the buzz words for this Fitzroy local. What I love most is sitting back and observing the look on faces of people who come in here. It is easy to identify the first timers to the Grub Food Van. A look of surprise gives way to one of curious discovery as they keep finding more surprises lying in wait.

It is thrilling to find a cafe that entices you with its decor and then continues to works its way into your heart with efficient, friendly and intelligent service.

The menu and the food meets expectations, with a focus on fresh and seasonal produce, often from their own greenhouse. I did not try hard to resist the temptation of a freshly squeezed orange juice and combined it with a swiss chard herb omelette with sourdough. The result was a slightly small but extremely satisfying, unpretentious meal.

As a seasonal menu ought to, theirs changes regularly. I have been there on three separate occasions and have been impressed each time. The quality of the coffee is the same - perfectly roasted and brewed to perfection. You can visit their website to get a indication of what might be available on an average day, but I would recommend going there and being surprised.
