Love is in the air at The Grounds of Alexandria and not just for Valentine's Day, but for the whole month of February. The love department (aka the styling team) here are turning the nooks and crannies of this precinct into inviting floral love nests for babes and beaus to capture memorable moments.
The laneway will be transformed into a romantic feast for your eyes with floral designs, furniture and props scattered about with candles and lace tablecloths, making for great photo opportunities. Add to this the picture of the fairy-lit garden with its fountain and the scene is set for some magic to happen. Perhaps it's time to get down on your knees guys and make an honest woman out of your ladies.
Three very special dinners will take place on Valentine's Day itself, the 14th (a Wednesday this year), two at Alexandria and one in The Grounds' city location. Featuring the freshest seasonal produce, they are as follows –
A Midsummer Night's Dream Special Event – The Grounds Garden
your choice of a bottle of red (2016 Barringwood Estate Pinot Noir) or white (2014 Barringwood Schonburger) wine to enjoy during the meal
a Taste of the Sea shared entree of smoked mackerel rillette with tarragon, yabby and crème fraiche tartlet, double island point scallop sesame and seaweed aioli, WA razorback prawn gratin, freshly shucked oyster with Champagne vinaigrette, Spanner crab cocktail and freshly-baked sourdough rolls with maple butter
a main of roasted Wagyu beef fillet with roast bone marrow and Bernaise sauce plus sides of duck fat roasted potatoes, oxheart tomato and basil salad, and steamed broccoli with almond emulsion
for dessert, a caramel flourless cake served with Dulce de Leche, honeycomb, waffle caramel chocolate, Dulce de Leche whip and caramel popcorn ice cream
barista coffee, tea and petit four to finish

Valentine's Dinner Service – The Grounds of the City
The coffee-inspired hub in George Street, The Grounds of the City, invites you to get cosy and romantic on Valentine's Day with its old-school charm and intimacy. It's a different world to that of The Grounds of Alexandria with its Barista Bar on one side and a wall of books, bottles and trinkets on the other side that makes you feel a bit like you're in Hogwarts Library with Harry Potter.
Group Executive Chef Paul McGrath is the common thread that has put together the menus in all three locations and here in the city, you can expect no less than a 4 course shared spread for couples.
The price per table of two is $280 and sees you enjoying the following –
a glass of Barringwood Cuvee on arrival and an amuse-bouche (hors d'oeuvre) to tease the palate before the meal
a bottle of your choice of wine (as per The Potting Shed menu) to share during the meal
an entree of WA scampi with its consommé, caviar, wild herbs and flowers
a main of roasted dry aged beef T-bone with wild mushroom & kale pithiviers and fresh horseradish plus sides of chopped butter lettuce with toasted seeds, aged parmesan & mandarin oil, and steamed summer greens with lemon & herb butter
a dessert of vanilla and macadamia cheesecake with summer berries, blackcurrant sorbet and strawberry chocolate
barista coffee, tea and petit fours to complete
Table reservations of 2 hours can be booked between 5.15pm-8.30pm. Closure is at 10pm.

There's some great choices between the menus and they're all great areas to dine in.
In addition to the dinners and month-long floral installations, evening cake decorating classes are taking place on the 7th and 8th February, from 6.30-8.30pm, at a cost of $140 per person. Attendees will be decorating a red velvet cake using fresh berries, chocolate covered strawberries, florals, and other edible delights. Timed perfectly to surprise your loved one on Valentine's Day, you'll find them held in The Grounds Bakery & Patisserie with a dedicated pastry expert. A step-by-step demonstration will be given that covers tips on preparing and layering a 4 layer cake, icing finishes and piping techniques, along with adding delicious touches to finish off your masterpiece. All equipment and ingredients are included in the price, as are wine and canapés, and not only will you take home the cake but also the recipe, icing, fillings and a cheat sheet to recreate the cake at home in future. Tickets can be purchased online.
There's a lot of love going around here with all of the above happening and ladies, don't forget that if your man doesn't get down on one knee, then you can take destiny into your own hands on the 14th as it is said these days to be the one day that you can do the proposing. Historically though, it was only allowed every 4 years on the 29th February (leap year day). It was St Patrick that declared this day and if the proposal was refused then the man had to pay either a monetary penalty or buy a gown for you. Sounds good to me.
For a bit of fun
Some of the residents at The Grounds of Alexandria are looking a bit lonely and could do with a mate so I put these profiles together. Perhaps, there's a partner out there for them.
