The Green Room on High Street is an organic, vegetarian café in Willunga with lots of vegan and gluten-free options. I have been spending a lot of time there lately, which is unusual as I don't tend to regularly frequent cafes, but there is something special about this one.
For starters, the café is very comfortable. It is bright, airy, and spacious with high ceilings and windows that allow for lots of natural light. Quirky creations, like a teapot mobile, decorate the space and the work of local artists adorn the walls. There is also a small selection of books, skin care, gift ware, and the like that are available to purchase.
Most of the seating is around tables and chairs inside the cafe, but there is also a veranda that overlooks the main street of charming Willunga, and a few couches where you can sit back, have a cuppa, and relax awhile.
The café prides itself on being family-friendly with a kids menu (offering favourites like a hash brown stack, house-made baked beans, and egg on toast) and a large children's play area out the back.
Latte, vege burger, hash brown stack, and spirulina smoothie (just try it)
While the atmosphere is laid-back and welcoming, it is the menu that has won me over. I am slowly eating and drinking my way through it and yet to hit a sour note. From a vegetarian's perspective, it is refreshing to have an entire menu to choose from with the vegan and gluten-free options clearly labelled.
The Green Room serves all-day breakfast, healthy lunches, and has a tantalising display of cakes and biscuits. The food is fresh and full of flavour and the café makes the most of all the wonderful local produce found near Willunga. Items on the menu cost between $8.50 and $16.50. It's not exactly cheap, but reasonable considering the quality of food.
Freshly squeezed juice, frittata, mushroom and lentil pie, and THAT chocolate pie
The all-day breakfast menu lists house-made muesli, raisin toast, fruit salad, pancakes with berry compote, and free-range eggs. Extras like hash brown, spinach, and mushrooms can be added to your order for a few more dollars.
Healthy lunch options include spinach and haloumi pie, lentil patties, raw vegetable pappadelle, toasted panini, frittata, mushroom and lentil pie, and the mysteriously named "food in a bowl".
There is a range of beverages to wash your meal down with, such as organic tea, coffee, milkshakes, and freshly squeezed seasonal fruit and vegetable juices. For dessert, there are several sweet treats that are difficult to choose between, like bliss balls and banana cake.
Some highlights from the menu so far include a spectacular looking vege burger that has a lentil patty, hummus, pickled beetroot, fried egg, cheese, tomato, relish, and leafy greens. The raw chocolate pie is deviously decadent with a crunchy base that encases and complements the rich chocolate centre. I never thought that something so green could be so delicious but, believe it or not, the spirulina smoothie is also a favourite.
Located at 2 High Street in Willunga, the cafe is the perfect place to go for a feed before stocking up on organic groceries at the Singing Cricket Food Co-op, which is just a few metres up the road.
The Green Room on High Street is open on Monday from 8 am until 3 pm, Tuesday to Friday from 8 am until 5 pm and on Saturday from 8 am until 3 pm. Visit the Facebook page for more information and to find out what food might be in the bowl.
