The Green Grocer Organic Store

It may seem odd coming from a vegan, but I've always been sceptical of organic stores. These days, eco marketing is so in demand almost every supermarket has 'organic', 'vegetarian' and 'eco-friendly' labelled produce. My usual mentality: why shop at a boutique-like organic store when most of its products are up to three times the price of the same products at a supermarket?
My mentality after stumbling upon
The Green Grocer: Oh My Gosh. I'm making this place my pantry.
The Green Grocer is a small organic produce shop on Boundary Street in Brisbane's West End. In fact it's exactly the kind of rustic, indie-style shop you could
only find in West End.
I discovered this place one weekday afternoon, on a walk with my sister. I went in because the shop's faded, hand-painted sign is exactly not the kind of sign that jumps out at you. I almost felt sorry for it, like the way you feel sorry for an old, scruffy dog.
"This place looks like it's been here forever," I thought.
I later found out it's been there over 15 years.
Inside, the shop has a somewhat shabby appearance, but the lovable kind like Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean.
I moved slow-mo passed a fridge full of coconut-yogurt, tofu and other vegan goodies. I inhaled like an addict by the shelves of free-trade coffee and tea. I stopped at the self-serve jars of dark-chocolate covered snacks and almost drooled.
The Green Grocer isn't where I'd do my grocery-shopping (mainly because the prices are slightly higher than other local farm-fresh stores). But its stock of things you'd never think of or that you can't buy anywhere else reigns supreme – this includes dark-chocolate-covered goji berries and the best organic, low-sugar, all-natural licorice I've ever tasted.
It's also a local gem for home-made remedial and naturopath advice. All served with a wholehearted smile from the friendly owner. On a side note, they also have a $5 minimum EFTPOS.
