Want a hotel on a budget? The Great Southern Hotel might just be for you.

Searching for a hotel room in the CBD for under $100 would seem like a fruitless enterprise, but the Great Southern Hotel came through with the goods. I managed to book an $80 room at one week's notice. I have to admit, I wasn't expecting much.
The room was just this side of a pleasant surprise. Expecting worn carpets and paper-thin sheets, I was happy to find the facilities were just like any other decent hotel room.

That doesn't mean there weren't down sides. Photos on sites like TripAdvisor don't give you a real idea of what these rooms are like. It's unusual for a door to be the only source of light, but that's exactly what the deal is here. An opaque panel beside the door allows the tiniest particles of light to filter through, and a panel in the door itself, lengthways, offers the only window. If you want privacy even this has to be closed.

The bathroom was a nice surprise. Although the main room is small, the bathroom has a light and airy feel to it. Modern fittings make it a pleasure to be in.

Given the price, I really can't complain. The room was clean, recently refurbished and had everything I needed.
