It's not often you can adopt a cat whilst wearing a flapper dress.

Well, now is your chance. The Lost Dogs' Home is hosting the the Great CATsby - a unique Great Gatsby-themed night dedicated exclusively for the adoption of their many cats without a home.

Pet adoption is a great and responsible way to find a lovable furry companion. The trend towards pet adoption continues to increase in Australia; and with this growing compassion, the number of abandoned pets that are euthanised each year is on the decline. Statistics released by the RSPCA each year show that the number of cats euthanised over the past five years is down by approximately 33%, and approximately 27% for dogs. But even so, the total number of cats, dogs and other animals still being euthanised is staggeringly high – over 24,000 cats were euthanised in the 2011-2012 year alone.

Capitalising on the hype generated by the release of Baz Luhrman's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's famous novel, the Great CATsby aims to promote "awareness of the value of adopting a cool cat".

Kate Hoelter, the General Manager of Communications and Fundraising, is quoted as saying: "Like F. Scott Fitzgerald's character Jay Gatsby, our cats' past lives are often a mystery to us. However, what we do know is that each and every one of our refined and stylish felines is special and has so much to offer. All are deserving of a loving home where they will be truly cherished."

The Great CATsby promises to be a lavish affair, with a heady mix of jazz music, Art Deco décor and refreshments on offer. Throughout the night, stylishly-dressed attendants will be available to introduce the shelter's beloved felines to you and also answer any questions would-be adopters may have.

If you do choose to adopt one of their lovable felines on the night, the shelter offers a special adoption price. You will also receive a Great CATsby-styled photo with your new pet and a gift pack. And if you're nervous about acquiring a new cat, the Lost Dogs' Home website also lists some tips on choosing a cat as well as information on how to look after your new pet.

Cat lovers working full-time needn't fear missing out. The adoption night will be held during the shelter's specially extended hours of 6 – 9pm to give more people a chance to attend. No bookings or appointments are required.

So if you have always wanted a fluffy feline to keep you warm a night, don your coattails and sparkly headpieces and head to the Lost Dogs' Home on May 30. Nothing beats that warm and fuzzy feeling from adopting a new pet. And you never know – you just may meet the love of your life.

The Lost Dogs' Home is an animal shelter dedicating to fighting for the rights, value and welfare of animals. It aims to promote responsible pet ownership and maintains a continuous campaign to educate the general public about their responsibilities towards the welfare of pet dogs and cats.
